Cool Winching Tool

I have explored the idea of getting a winch, but I do not want the added weight on the front of my boat for somthing I may use once in two years. Has anyone ever seen any type of a winching tool that will pull a rope without spooling it onto a roll. The ideal item I would use would be hand driven and small and with a 1000lb rating. I am not sure if anything like this is around, but it could be stored, light, and easily removed during the off season.

Block and tackel maybe?????? But you'ld have to have a hell of a lot of wraps to make a thousand # pull capacity. Maybe not.

I think I would get a good come along if I were you. not the cable kind. maybe an ingersol with a chain they are small and light weight and you could hook it to the eyelet on the bow.

Thats what I'm packin.

Check this out:

http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/pr...ge.asp?mi=1514

The rope goes in one side and out the other so it pulls the length of the 100' rope. I have one. It looks pretty good, but I haven't needed to use it yet, so I don't know if it is as good as it looks.

BTW, I found this thing googleing around and somewhere in there I was on a site about professional arborists (sp?) who work with big trees and branches. The consensus was that while these units are useful, they can slip, so you don't want to use them where a slip would cause injury. They didn't say if they slipped a lot or just a bit and then grabbed again. I wasn't worried about it for my intended purpose. First forum member that has to use one of these needs to post up and tell us how it does.

I have one of those Maasdam rope pullers. They work great. I've pulled moose out of ponds and my boat off gravel and mud bars. I carry about 300' of rope and the puller with me all the time. My boat weighs about 2200lbs dry. It has never slipped once on me. I made a cheater bar for the handle to make it a bit easier to pull when it's loaded. I would recomend getting rope with minimal stretch. Mine is a bit on the stretchy side and if it broke under a load it would be deadly.

I would reccomend it. Only downside I see is the bulk of the rope.

It isn't easy to use, or fast. But when you're sitting there pulling on it, it gives you lots of time to think about what you did wrong, lol.

Cheers

Cool Re: Winching Tool

The up side is that you can still get yourself out, and do not have to call a buddy to harass you while he "saves" you skin.

Sounds like a winner to me.

I bought mine with the rope that Maasdam sells. I don't know how stretchy it is, but I figured it was the right stuff. Not as fast as a powered winch or better yet, a windlass, but much better than using a regular come along ten feet at a time.

I was thinking of using a winch like on the front of a boat trailer, but by the time you get it rigged to pull any direction the whole assembly would be a bit big and cumbersome. Also, you would be back to pulling only ten to twenty feet at a time before you had to reset and get a new bite.

As for the bulk of the rope, if you have to reach out a certain distance you have to have something that long, and at least it isn't chain!!!

Question Re: Winching Tool

Sounds Good . What do you guys use for an anchor point . I usually do not hunt timbered areas just marsh . What would get the best bite in the mud , besides your boat ????? Seems to me you would need something that you could throw yourself , at least where I hunt.
Checked the site for pullpal but they seem a little pricey

I plan to use my anchor. Pull Pal is supposed to be very good, but is pricey. Also, if I remember right, they are a bit bulky. I don't remember the weight. Some have suggested mobile home anchors and "T" posts. There has been at least one thread about anchors for winching.

Cool Re: Winching Tool

Your right. There was one little anchor that was small for ATV's. It was a small spade with a slide hammer to set and remove it. It was very slick!

I have a Winch-Out in my boat. It's a screw in anchor and works good in sand. You can order them online at winchout.com.

If you want to save yourself some work i wouldn't give up on the winch idea. You can get them for pretty cheap on ebay- probably the same or cheaper than the rope puller after you buy the rope. If you have a receiver mount on the boat you can also use it for your truck or anything else for that matter and only have it with you when you go somewhere you might need it. If not, I'm sure with little work a removeable mount could be made. I know a Warn ATV winch is about 15 lbs- but they are more expensive as well.

This might not be the right one but you get the idea: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2500l...spagenameZWDVW

Glen just posted up on a new product coming soon to his arsenal. Looks like it might be a winner for those who need a little more than a hand winch.
