Default Tempo Fuel Line

Had a Briggs in for repair that was backfiring excessively, hmm what causes an engine to backfire either running lean or out of time. So going more towards a lean mixture rather than a timing issue I had to determine why it was running lean, not enough fuel or a vacuum leak. Well since the engine would half-arsed run I went around the intake ports with carb cleaner, made no difference. Sprayed around the carbeurator base, no difference. A brand new ( Alarm goes off here ) see through filter had already been installed so I was able to watch for any troubles with the fuel pump. Time to pull the carb.

Carbeurator off and disassembled, well well well, looky here

Unfortunately in the picture you cant see the extreme amounts of Tempo Fuel Line liner in the bottom of the bowl.

Heres the problem Tempo uses a lined fuel line, it has a vinyl braid outer and a plastic inner liner. The inner liner deteriates in 2-3 yrs of use, sunlight does not help much either. "Disclaimer"-This may have been corrected by tempo and they may have started using a different design.
But, I'm still seeing the same old line on alot of newer Bombardier jet boats and riders

Now for the "Alarm goes off here"

When I noticed a brand new filter installed I called the customer to ask him about it. The engine had never had a filter on it, he had some trouble when he first bought the motor and removed the filter and replaced the fuel tank. More than likely he had an air leak the fuel tank.

Moral of my story--- Fuel filters are good, MMMkay. The customer could have saved himself some downtime and a repair bill if the filter had been left in place.
