I've got a S.D. upland trip planned again this year for the third year in a row, and it would be great to be able to combine some ducking with that trip. My dilemma is twofold: one is where to go, and two is combining season dates with our upland trip AND getting waterfowl permits applied for on time. SD rules & regs are unbelievably complicated, segmented, and confusing.....anyone who has ever hunted there probably know what I mean. Any advice y'all could give on the where, who to contact, and where to stay for some ducking would be appreciated. We upland hunt about 40-50 miles south of Aberdeen near Redfield. Thanks. | |

There are a ton of Public Sloughs and Lakes between Aberdeen and Watertown . Webster is 50 mi north of watertown and 50 east of Aberdeen . As for Permits , Well thats another story . You just have to keep looking at the website and put in as soon as the drawing opens . They only issue 3700 Out of State permits ?????????? Haven't figured that out Yet.... I have only not drawn once in 8 Years , so I have preference points this Year . If You know someone out there it is easy to get permission to hunt corn and bean fields for Ducks .[Laydown Blinds are great for naps] . That is mostly what We do , but then a son of one the guys is the County Tax man and He knows everybody ... For the most part if You ask nicely most people will let you hunt ducks , different story for Ringnecks . Sure is nice to have something to do while You wait for the magic 12:00 start time for "Ditch Chickens"

You can buy permits across the counter at the indian reservation in Pierre. Probably the same story on the others. I have a number for the one in Pierre if your interested in it. The draw can be a pain up there, I've heard. I just started hunting the ducks this past year. I have been on the chickens now for 10 years. They have a pile of geese too. Allen rockingRranch@att.net

I had been road hunting for years and when I went up there it was legal! NICE! Just Kidding. I told them guys up there that we hunted "road hunters".

RockinR...which reservation (name of) are you referring too? I looked at the SD Game and Fish website last night, and tried to sift through the multitude of pages of info. Between identifying the hunt units, dates, species, license requirements, etc it's like trying to navigate a complicated federal tax return in the old days before TurboTax! Dang...they sure don't make it simple. I did find that the waterfowl lottery applications will be available June 1 and due July 11....if the website is correct and has been updated. I If anyone has any leads on who to contact for guide info. in the "Lower Plains North" unit or anywhere close to that half of the state I'd appreciate it. Using a guide would simplify things, but a "do-it-yourself" outing would be just as fun and much cheaper! Also, if anyone has any info. on hunting the southern/southeastern part of North Dakota for ducks that might also be of possible interest. From where we will be on our pheasant trip to N.D. probably is not an unreasonable drive. |

The res that we went to was the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation. It is near Pierre and about a third of the rest of the state. It's big. I have a number for the guide there, but I am in Ms. working and I won't have that info for a couple of weeks. I can give it to you then. Give my you email and I'll send it to you.
