Just found this forum yesterday. I am relocating from Chattanooga TN to Louisiana in April and wanted to try to make some hunting and fishing contacts and get some perspective on the area. Initial house hunting for the area seems to put me me in the Covington or Folsom area. Is anyone familiar with that area and what the duck hunting might be like? I won't be far from Lake Ponsitrane (haven't looked up the spelling of it) and I notices several marshes nearby. If you have any knowlege of the area it would be appreciated! MathewsMan |

Drop me a PM when you get settled....... I live in Mandeville (5 miles south of Covington). Fresh Water Fishing is good! Salt water fishing is AWESOME! You have several NRA's and WMA's to duck hunt within 75 miles from you including Big Branch NRA, Manchac WMA, Pearl River WMA, Salvador WMA, Biloxi WMA, etc... Here is a link to the LDWF website to get you started: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/wmas/ I also recommend you subscribe to the Louisiana Sportsman Magazine. There are a ton of articles in there that will point you in the right direction of where you can hunt and fish. They have a website and forum too, http://www.louisianasportsman.com/ Here is one other hunting and fishing forum, http://www.rodnreel.com/ Good Luck with your move!

Thanks Coot. Aprreciate the info. I'll take a look at the other forums you mentioned and get a subscription to the magazine. As for you other fellers.....I've been known to wear out a few props myself. I was stationed for a few years in Beaufort SC and its not uncommon to hit a sandbar that seemed to form from outta nowhere!! Ive gone out many times and followed my exact track on the return trip only to run aground on a sand bar. Aggrevating!! Looking forward to getting down there and getting back on some redfishing! From what Ive read, it seems LA has some decent refishing. I have a 21ft Trophy center console so I am hoping to get some offshore fishing in as well. Have not had a chance to really research a whole lot about the offshore stuff there but I am sure I will figure that out soon. Quick question about the offshore stuff though. Are there many oil rigs near the coast for grouper/snapper fishing??? Just curious. Don't know much yet about the situation there so I am just now starting to dig around and figure out what the fishing/hunting scene looks like. Thanks again coot. I'll be in touch soon. MM |

I did quite a lot of red fishing when I was in SC. Really hoping to get more into the offshore stuff there. The problem I had in SC with the offshore fishing was my boat holds 84 gallons of fuel and in order to really reach blue water there (100+ ft) you pretty much had to run about 70 miles offshore. I just simply didn't have that kind of range with trolling time. So I am really hoping that my boat fits the bill for LA a little betteer than it did in SC. I don't have a smaller boat right now that really allows me to fish the flats/marshes. My boat has a deep V hull and fishing the marshes is a little tricky. I made it work for me in SC but its definately challenging. So I hope at some point after relocating i can find a way into a smaller boat to do the red fish/trout fishing. MM |

You will be suprised where and what you can fish for with the 21' Trophy. I have a 24' bay boat I use for trout and reds, but when fishing red fish close in I much prefer my Gator Trax Rig with the casting deck and all. I plan to add a poling platform to it this summer.

Coot: I totally agree. I put my boat in some of the smallest little creeks throwing a castnest during shrimping season. I can and have been in creeks with only about 2 1/2 ft of water. Certainly not eh best rig for the job is all. Its sometimes problematic casting and throwing nests over the bow rails and all that. Im sure I will get by on the boat I have for now but I am hoping to add something smaller in the future for bass fishing/redfishing/duck hunting etc.... I would love a nice 18 foot aluminum boat I can dual purpose for fishing and duck hunting. That would really set things up nicely. MM |

man...moving from the nooga to LA. I'd be pretty freakin' pumped about that. Wish I was moving back. The only thing I can tell you is that LA has more great places to hunt and fish than most others...hence the "sportsman's paradise" motto. If you're an avid outdoorsman, your main problem will come from spending too much time on the water and in the woods. You could spend the next few years trying new places just on the eastern half of the state from Funroe all the way to Delacroix. Enjoy it. Living in Atlanta makes me realize how much I took for granted when I was growing up. |

BLM: thanks for the post. I am really excited about mmoving. Granted my office is in the 9th ward but I'm sure it will be ok. I have been on recruiting duty for the last three years and haven't had any time off. Getting back to some normal working hours and having weekends off will be refreshing to say the least. Before moving to Chattanooga on this assignment I used to be on the water or in the woods nearly every single weekend. I am really anxious to having that opportunity again. Dont know how you do the Atlanta thing. Little too busy of a place for me. Good thing is there should be plenty of opportunities for hunting in fishing not far from there.... Chattanooga has been a pretty good place to live. Its just unfortunate that I haven't had any time off to really be able to get out and do much hunting or fishing. Many people here say this area is a very good hunting/fishing place. MM |

| Im sure its really not THAT bad but its certainly a different place than I have ever lived before. Out of curiosity, back to tthe subject of hunting, I recently watched an episode of Arrow Affliction (hunting program) where they were bowhunting alligators/croc's and I am not positive they were in LA but I think they were. Basic setup was attatching a buoy to the arrow line and spotlighting for them in an alumininum flat bottom boat. It actually look fairly challenging to get a shot on one. Anyways....what exactly are the general rules on hunting alligators there? I pulled up the LA hunting regs and did a little reading but didn't really find anything on them. Is there legal bowhunting for alligators there?? Is it a draw type of thing? Is there actually a season for this kind of hunting? Mathews |

Correction: The arrow affliction program was hunting gators in Florida not LA. Looked it up. MM |

I don't know much about alligator hunting. Never done it, but La. has a season and you must get tags. Not sure on the allowed methods to take them either.

That was my last duty station, with 4th MAW on Dauphine Street. We used to run out the front gate to Canal Street during the day, but don't try it after dark in less than squad strength!

I hear ya! I'm a little dissapointed with the housing situation but I'm sure it will work out . Might need some pistol range practice before I head that way. Lol!
