Default Need some advice...

Hey MB members,

I bought a used 35 Bal. Hyper about a month ago, and I've got a couple of questions. First; I would like to get the RPM's up closer to the 4K mark. When I bought the motor she was only running 3700 WOT out of water. I've since chaged out spark plugs to recommeded double platinum (gapped correctly), Mobil 1 oil, fresh oil filter, and changed the air filter. I just picked up a new battery today so after I started her up she is only getting to 3780 now:damm:... My boat should be here this coming weekend so I'm trying to get the motor tuned before I get on the water. I also changed out the prop sleeve and upgraded to the one sent out by MB. The other issue I have is with the motor backfiring when I let off too much from the gas. I have to slow down first before letting go of the throtle, or she will blast one off.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

do you know how long the motor sat before you got it. may be carb problem if it sat for a while. just something to check if you haven't already.

Don't really know exactly how long she sat around. The tach only shows hours so you never really know start dates/last run items.... I think it may just be some final adjustments that are missing, but I new to the tweaking of MM's so I put the question out here. I'm pretty sure my GT/MM rep will be able to point me in the right direction this weekend. I just hate bothering him all the time if ya know what I mean.... Also; I noticed that the MM has a shim plate attached, so I'm guessing the previous owner had it on a regular Jon boat. My new rig is a GT, so will I need the shim plate???? My first thought would be no, but just one more question for the gallery.

As for the shim. It depends on the year of the GT and the transom angle. Ultimately if you can trim the motor up and down enough to make it run properly you do not need it. A shims purpose is simply to get the motor further down in the mud etc in most cases.

The motor will do that running WOT out of the water, but you shouldn't have any problems in gear and in the water. I can hit just ovet the 4K mark out of the water and in gear with the big blade I turning between 3800-3950, depending on the load, and on the water I have no problems with backfiring if I let off running wide open. Out of the water I have to back off the trottle slowly to keep it from backfiring.

It's a brand new 1744GE GT with a squared off transom like the Intimigator/SS hull. Any tips on how to get the RPM's up so it will run right under load?

Well, tell him to carry the GPS....cuz if that 27GDSD is running 30+mph on a GD18x48, you'll be doing around 45mph with a 35 on that 17x44...at least on that gps...lol.:Banane48:

Seriously, just hit your governor according to the instructions and give me a call if there are any problems. I plan on leaving out Friday to pick up the rigs.:017:

I may just do that Almo...... I would love to say that I've got my rig running that fast. The only reason I've not given you a shout is because I hate bothering you for little things. I also figured we would be able to work this out when I get the boat this weekend. Be safe on your trip if I don't talk to you before you leave. I'm gonna give the adjustments a go today at lunch, or after I get home this afternoon.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of the help, and special thanks to Bill/ALMODUX... After playing around with her this afternoon she is running much better. I expect to get just a bit more once I'm able to put it on the boat and get some test runs done.

Thanks again...

Did you get rid of the backfire? What RPM did you get it to?

The only time it backfired is when I came off the gas real fast. When I ran it yesterday I just came off the gas slower and it never backfired. I think one reason for the backfire was because I have a stiff return spring that I made. As for RPM out the motor; I peaked 3900 WOT out of water, but like I said I still have a few tweaks to make. 4K should be easily reached once I get the idle RPM's set right and make an adjustment. I noticed that I was idleing way below 1K before I started fooling around yesterday, so that threw off my top-end rpm.
