Default Lower Outdrive Installation

If you are changing gears or doing an outdrive repair make sure to tighten the bolts after you have raised the drive in the bolt holes first.

The lower outdrive mounting holes are slightly larger than the bolts. If you install the drive with the bolts in the top of the holes, the drive will move upward within the holes the first time you hit a lot or rock. Even though this is less than .060 movement, it will loosen the belt 5 pounds.

When you install the outdrive, run the bolts in but do not tighten. Squeeze the belt which will raise the drive in the mounting holes. Then tighten down one bolt while holding the belt. Then tighten all the bolts. Check the bolts again at two hours.

Another tip. Put 243 loctite in the holes about four threads inside before installing the bolts. They are blind holes and if you put the loctite on the threads the exiting air will blow the loctite out of the threads. Also, apply sealer a small distance from the holes to prevent sealer and thread locker from mixing. Will not cure if mixed.

Check belt tension at two hours after installing. It should be between 12 and 14 pounds. If up to 18 pounds, that is okay also. You don't have to tension the belt if between 12 and 14 pounds. Use the Gates tension gauge. Do not guess.
