I use 5W-30 Briggs Synthetic.

The entire motor (including oil filter and cooler) holds 80 oz according to the owners manual and briggs web site, however when I do an oil change most motors only take about 2 qt (some a litte more some a little less).

Just curious.. it seems that most of you prefer synthetic oil as opposed to regular oil. Why is this?

It's recommended by the MB Manufacturer...this is all on the MB web site or the owners manual

If the motor takes 80 oz and when you change the oil it only takes two quarts what happens if you have regular oil in it and want to change to synthetic.

Read the label on the brand that you intend on swithcig to and see if there are any warnings. To my knowledge I dont know of a single brand of synthetic that will not mix with other oils.

Synthetic oil is better in every aspect (do a search on synthetics there is plenty of material), it has a much better lubricity (it is slicker) which means that it reduces friction. Less friction= less heat/runs cooler, better gas economy, longer engine life/metal on metal wear is much less, etc etc

All of BoatDR's info is right on the money. There is one thing to remember however for you guys buying new motors. Do your break in with regular mineral oil. Synthetic is so slick it does not allow the metal parts to "seat" properly. After break in use only the proper weight synthetic for your temperature range and your engine should run forever!

What is considered the break in time? I plan on running Royal Purple, just don't know when to switch over.

Sorry weathers, but that is not true, just a rumor that the oil companies started years ago to put doubt in peoples minds about using synthetics.

I was told all new GM motors come with synthetic from the factory. Not sure if it is true but?
