Default Decoy paint

I remember the thread and looked back on it where guys here were burlapping and wondering what was the best decoy for the cash...
I updated my spread to the GHG's and man the detail on those is unbelievable. The pintail, widgeon and gad's are just works of art. Buddy told me that GHG had a lifetime guarantee on the paint? From 2 seasons they still look good, I'd just like to touch'em up here and there. Anybody know of a GHG rep that can get a paint kit on the market? Or is there one I just haven't seen yet?

They're real easy to get ahold of just send GHG an email. I could use some white myself. I'll email them and let you know what I find out.

Finally got through and John told me that they don't have a kit and that most people that he has talked to use krylon Fusion and that they spray the clear afterwards for protection against chipping

A coat of spray lacquer put on the decoys first helps keep the paint in place.

sweet...i guess just match what you can to the closest color and blast away? seems simple enough.

Thumbs up Re: Decoy paint

Thanks also to You Rocketman . I just finished my dekes the other day . Put them in the bag and pulled some today and they were already showing wear from being in the bag...??? Parker paints ?????
Will the clear fusion make them too shiney ???? I have always used Armor All on the heads or my drake mallards but I don't know about the rest of the body....

tcryan, I have been reading up on painting deks before i started on my burlapping process you were speaking of. They said the craft paint from walmart was the best for the money. I aint an artist, but i thought my deks turned out pretty well. Just buy you some and some small craft brushes and you'll be fine. I'll try and post my recent pics of the deks tommorow.

Jack,

I took all my black ducks and actually sprayed the bodies Krylon Camouflage flat black and teh heads tank. I did touch up the beaks with olive and a dull orange/yellow and used a sharpie for head lines and eye cover. The blacks around here really look black from an airplane and I noticed more birds bombing onto the decoys.

The trick I mentioned with spray shellac helps the paint stick better so it doesn't come right off when you put them in the sack. Now that they sell shellac in a spray can it makes it easier.

Question Re: Decoy paint

I know what You mean about how dark they are . Theere are a ton of them here in the upper bay on the Military shores and marshes . They look like inkspots on the water.....
Still am worried about the shine though . Do they have flat Shellac ???????

Paint teh shellac as an undercoat. It helps the paint adhere to the plastic of the decoy. I paint mine with flat black and leave them. No other coating to shine. The water will helps ome of them. I painted some mag G&H cause I didn't like the color they had and you can see them from a mile a way with the plain black...I think it helped to get them to come in at the public sites last year. I ended up taking a lot of black ducks. Managed to get my limit of them almost every day I hunted.

I don't know about fusion paint but there are some other rattle can manufacturers that make a satin clear coat that does not shine SJack, I also used it on my mud motor to seal the paint. The fusion paint I believe was developed for plastic

I got my Sweetie to help on touch up by saying that she was way better at it than me, which is true, and that the dekes needed to look right and it saves buying new ones. Now she askes me every year when we're going to do the touch up.Life is good...haha
