Default Cause of starter failure...

Those at the FL Roundup may have seen me doing the Pull-Start dance with my 23 Mini. Stylish and funky, I know, but not fun to do all day. Kevin Lusk helped me diagnose my problem to be a faulty starter. I took it apart when I got home and found that the red protective cap on the red cable jumper (the one that goes from the pole on the solenoid to the stud on the bottom of the starter casing) was holding water and moisture like a tiny cup. I had noticed that my starter had been hesitating. After sliding back the red protective boot, I found the stud had corroded to pieces and had broken off of the brush assembly inside the starter casing. Went to my local Briggs dealer and bought a new brush assembly for $15.00. Starter fires off like a charm again!

Moral of the story is check to make sure that the upside-down red rubber boot isn't holding water around the starter post, 'cause sooner or later it will corrode it. Sorry I don't have the pics to show what I'm talking about right this second.

Thanks Kevin!

WD

U can put a daub of dielectric silicon, or plain old bearing grease in the boot to keep water out.

I like that Dow 111 silicone grease, clear, water repelling and no petrolium to eat up the rubber parts.
