Default Burlapping decoys

I just bought about 4 dozen old herters foam dekes from a guy at work today and am going to attempt to burlap them and repaint them for next season. The guyI bought them from was doing it to them to but had too many and the wife told him they had to go. I'll post some pics of some befores and process. We'll see how artsy I am.

Any of ya'll ever done this, I did two last night and put the burlap on first and then put on the mastic. Everything I read said to put the mastic on and then put on burlap. I'll post some pics in a day or two.

Put a thin layer of mastic on the block to hold the burlap on then work in more mastic. Make sure to smooth everything out good before it drys as a big glob of mastic and burlap takes a while to sand down latter.

Here are some pics of the process.
1. Starting decoy
2. Burlap and one coat of mastic
3. Painted Deke( I aint an artist, but i'm getting better.)

Other than the painting, the decoys look real good. What do ya'll think?

Talking Re: Burlapping decoys

Phoneman, I have a doz. burlap herters i've had for about 15 yrs. have never done anything to them, but mistreated them, and they look the same as when I got them other than they could use some fresh paint. Get good at the painting and i'll pay you to paint mine since Cabela's does'nt offer this anymore

well i looked at several different dekes that i have and some in magazines and tried to copy on this one. It looks kinda splotty up close, but the color of the mallard back is kinda speckled (lack of better word) black and grey. These decoys that i painted look real from 15 yards. I guess if they get close enough to look at the detail of my paint job, then they worked.

Phoneman, I don't live that far from you , Hartsville maybe I could get up with you and bring you a couple of the better looking dec's., so you could work on the colors, but these are in the old paint pattern.

Dang phoneman I wish my last ones looked that good. I think mine ended up looking something like a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a parrot. Needless to say they were retired several years ago.
