I'm new here on the forum, but was at last years mudfest. I have been talking to Mike about maybe planning a little poker run for this year. Anybody interested? Probably just $10 buy, cash pay out to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. JR |

With long range fishing trips, wedddings, and my own wedding, we'd be looking mid to late August. Maybe August 15th...what do you guys think? |

That is the same date as the Oregon Waterfowl Festival, so that is a no go for me. I took my boat down to the mud fest local on Monday, water level is perfect.

I think the "Rat Club" torched yesterday. I could see the smoke coming from over there all afternoon. Brimmer called me from Keno and said he could see the flames on the marsh. Might not be a lot of tules left to be jumping.

Mike , The Rat Club burnt up from one end to the other. The only tules are along the edge of the river. I wonder if it was mother nature that started the fire

Rumor I heard was: Rat Club is claiming it was kids with "fireworks". Funny thing is, they havnt done any boardwalk work yet this summer. JR

Drove 97 south of town this morning. All I can say is "toasty". Looks like the "rat clubbers" will be fighting the boats on the rivers edge for position come season. I saw a lot of black cinder with only a few tules still lining the canals. Not enough cover to hide a person, none the less a boat. Glad the winds were from the north and Miller Island wasn't damaged. Hope all the nesting birds were hatched out and made it to open water to escaped the flames.

For those of us not in the know, please explain "rat clubbers" and the situation. Thanks.

There is a club called the "rat club". It has about a $25,000 buy-in. Problem is most of the club is nav waterway - courts found against club in lawsuits. They have no water rights to flood, so they allow water through breached levees that makes most of the club part of the riverway. The history is a lot of conflict between river hunters and "rat clubbers" over the years. I don't hunt the river much, but the Basin Mudfest is on much of the club. It is accessible from the main river easily by a boat with a mudmotor making it Nav Waterway under Federal Law. The club could close off the levees I quess, but due to lack of water it would probably be an upland bird club at that point. Hope that helps.

Mike, The wind was actually coming from the south-south west. The fire started on the south end of the club and took off. The fire crews lit a back fire on the north end. The only plus side for the rat club is that the honks may like the regrowth.

the rat club guys dont have to worry about cover for season, tules will be back soon enough, they burn that club off every couple years with a few road flares. then ol' Mr. Roe can have his clients back in the south end in no time. lol JR

I don't think Roe has been hunting down the river in 4 years or so. Anyway the mud should be nice and "Black" for mudfest.
