Default 2007/2008 Florida Duck Hunting Thread

Alright, stealing an idea from Coot, let's start a 2007/2008 Florida Duck Hunting Thread.

Here are a few pictures from Today's November Opener. Some Spoonies, Ringers, Florida Mallards and one Drake Widgeon. (Plus one coot my son "swears" was a teal).

Finally and FL thread!!

Porterdcw I am still trying to free up to come see your hide sometime if the offer is still on.

I got a new yellow lab pup, so have been spending a ton of time with the dog. Went out to Lake Jessup, for the opener, shot a few, deserved it for not scouting. Merritt Island was pretty empty, except for the shilo 5 from what i hear, there are birds on the River though.

Yesterday's wild weather brought over 2" of rain, thunderstorms, wind and plenty of ducks looking for a place to land!

Yesterday's action - 17 Ringers and 1 Drake Widgeon. The Widgeon looked like it was either a juvenile or in eclipse plumage.

Last night a front moved through with high winds and lots of rain.

Weather was nasty and the ducks were looking to sit down quick.

What part of Central Fl are you hunting getting into all those ringers? We are getting in to them on Merritt Island, but I have not seen many elsewhere

We went to Merritt Island yesteday, as we had drawn an L Pond permit. Got up at 2:00 am to arrive by 4:00 am. For some reason the water was about two to three feet lower than when we scouted a month ago.

There were several areas of pure mud flats, where water used to be. One of my friends said he knew he was in trouble when he threw his first decoy out and never heard a splash!

Ended up with three Mottled and two Widgeon.

Yeah, the water is falling out of everwhere. We have been hunting Merritt Island across the lagoon in area 3 quite a bit. Water is very low.

All of the shilos in area 4 are very low.

Did you get any more shooting other than the widgeona and the mottled or was it pretty slim?

We went out yesterday, (sat) and nearly got killed crossing the lagoon in the small craft advisory and 3-5 foot waves. Great ducky weather but very scary in a 14' footer with 16horse LT

I am curious how you are dealing with the weight and the width of the hide. I hunt Merritt Island a ton, and the cover would be great for the hide, but i wonder if it would be too heavy for some mud flats, as well as the width a problem? Also curious if three men in the layout position makes the boat lean backwards and puts your feet in the air??

Any Fl hunters actually hunting still? We are just shooting out Bills out at Meritt Island right now, snuck out with a widgeon with the bills last trip. Wish you could shoot 6 of them, them are everwhere.

Anyone hunt Lake Woodruff?

Been slamming the divers pretty good out at Merritt Island lately. We shot a beautiful drake can yesterday! First one for me in FL and the man was fully plumed out. Had two come in and land in our decoys, finally decided they were cans and by that time the other was gone. Let a younger boy i had with me take him, it is going on the wall for sure.

Broke the belt on my brother's boat but luckily it was close to our spot so we could paddle and hunt. Then we had a seven mile hike in waders through swamps...but we made the best out of it and had a good weekend!!! Brother got himself some Jewelry this weekend (popped his cherry)!
My bird boy .(Bro retrieving a male ringer)

Two of these woodrows were killed the evening before

Thanks! Yeah he was pretty excited about it.
That story you told was pretty awesome considering that you or one of the guys in your group banded that bird.

Can't believe this season is already coming to an end...Really just starting to heat up for us. Two weekends to go. Make it count.

Scouted the lake after hunting yesterday. Found the birds and we got out early this morning. Setup and blinded by 5:15 to ensure the other local hunter would not get the spot Since we both use the same private ramp I have patterned him as well;). Low and behold he never showed. I slept in the bottom of the boat for a good hour, while my cohort piled up in the bow in the fetal position trying to stay warm, it was nice to catch a few z's. At about 0645 had 60+ birds in the decoys. It is nice to be in the sweet spot.
